Monitor and adapter do not know anything about visible refresh rate. They know about scan line size - how many pixels are in horizontal line. scan line size is larger than visible reolution due to way minitor works number of scan lines - how many lines is on the screen. Again the number is more than apparent

My vid card is a pretty crappy 4 MB thingy so I was wondering if replacing the vid card would improve the refresh rate? or is it the limitation of the monitor? I don't think the amount of memory on the card affects its maximum refresh rate, though it does determine the maximum resolution and colour depth.

My monitor is a 19" Sony Multiscan 400PS and my graphics card is a Hercules Prophet II GTS Pro. In adaptor properties of windows ME there was a refresh rate option called "optimum" which always selected the highest safe refresh rate for my monitor at any given resolution. There appears to be no such setting in XP.

I have a Radeon 32 MB DDR and a Sony G400 monitor. I can't set the refresh rate higher than 100Hz vertical in the adapter settings. I know my monitor can do higher as I had a Matrox G400 running at around 110Hz. It had its own utility to adjust the refresh rate. How can I set the refresh rate higher for the Radeon?
